University Mental Health Day is on 9 March this year and aims to bring together the university communities from around the UK to make mental health a priority for all students, to help us positively impact the future of student mental health.
Hosted jointly by Student Minds, the UK’s student mental health charity, and UMHAN, Uni Mental Health Day encourages university students and staff across the UK to get involved in spreading awareness and promoting the importance of mental health on our local campuses.
The day also challenges the health sector, higher education sector and the UK government to make student mental health a priority. It is the organisers’ ambition to help students succeed and thrive, and these sectors can help them achieve it.
As a mental health provider in Hull and the East Riding, Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust’s teams, together with their partners, work closely with our local universities to promote the external, NHS-led support available for students any time of the year.
Students can face many challenges during their years of university. Daily academic pressures and financial worries are among some of the most common, but we must also acknowledge other causes such as global concerns, loneliness, identity crises or discrimination.
With as many as 2.3 million students currently residing in the UK and studying at our local universities, it has never been more important to ensure that these concerns are taken seriously, and that support is out there for those who need it.
Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust would like to take this opportunity to remind our local students that mental health support is available in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
Their teams encourage all students when moving to Hull and the surrounding areas to register with a local GP, as this can help with referrals should you need one.
Beyond this, their mental health teams would like to remind you that there are some services you can self-refer into, including their East Riding Emotional Wellbeing Service and Hull Let’s Talk, delivered by City Health Care Partnership (CHCP).
In Hull the Let’s Talk service provide on campus assessments and treatments within the student hub at the university, linking in directly with the student wellbeing team and local GPs. This provides a holistic wraparound package of care for students who are struggling with their psychological wellbeing.
In in the East Riding, if you feel you would benefit from additional support, such as Talking Therapies, please do consider getting in touch with the Emotional Wellbeing Service (EWS).
