NHS Hull Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and NHS East Riding of Yorkshire CCG have jointly funded a new programme aimed at supporting Hull and East Riding residents aged 11 – 25 years old who are recovering from an eating disorder or experiencing disordered eating.
The programme, developed and delivered by eating disorder charity SEED, will provide support through workshops, guest speakers with lived experience, 1:1 sessions and group work. The programme will be individualised for each participant to provide the necessary resources required to support their individual recovery journey.
Gemma Oaten, SEED Patron and Charity Manager said: “Even though I feel like I’ve recovered in terms of how I deal with situations, what I hadn’t acknowledged was that, from the age of 24, when I started to recover and live, I then had to figure out who I was and how to live in the real world.”
Each participant will receive support for around six months, ensuring they are equipped with the skills they need to move on from their eating disorder and address any issues they are facing that may be stopping them from leading a fulfilling and happy life.
Elements of the programme will include anxiety management, copy strategies, self-esteem, assertiveness, relapse prevention and independent growth.
Gemma added: “When I was trying to raise the profile of SEED during lockdown, I was speaking to more and more people about their recovery journeys, and it quickly dawned on me that there is a recovery after the recovery. There are so many people out there who are struggling and need support.”
