Older People’s Celebration Week returns to Hull with a packed programme of events for 2016.
Running from Monday 26 September to Saturday 1 October, the celebrations recognise the achievements and contributions that older people make to our community.
The week kicks off at KCOM Stadium with a city-changing health and care conference.
From 10am-3pm on Monday 26 September 2016, the Better Care in Hull conference is a chance to discuss how local health and social care services can work to offer the best possible support to our community.
Organised by NHS Hull Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Hull City Council, the free conference is now in its second year.
It brings together professionals from health, social care and the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector, plus a number of service users, who will explore how the Better Care in Hull scheme has worked over the last year.
The scheme focuses on services for older people, looking at how they can make it easier for older people to access health and social care support in their local communities whenever they need it.
Older people in Hull have said that it’s important to them to be able to stay in their own homes and remain independent for as long as possible. This aim is at the centre of the Better Care in Hull Scheme and should be the goal of all local services.

The conference is just one part of Older People’s Celebration Week. Events this year include exercise to music sessions, coffee mornings and lunch clubs across the whole of Hull, with many sessions free of charge.
City residents are also invited to attend the Older People’s Celebration Days at the Mercure Hotel, Ferensway, Hull, on Wednesday 28 September and Thursday 29 September. The celebration days will run from 10am – 4pm, with a host of free performances, events, and advice sessions for people to get involved with.
As part of the event on September 28 there will also be a ‘Hull’s Got talent 55+’ competition which will see some of the city’s exceptional older people dazzle the audience with an array of skills. Tickets are available from the Pickering and Ferens Office, the Maltings Hull, or from Travel Extra at the Paragon Interchange.
Throughout the week NHS Hull CCG will be talking to local people about current proposals to develop Hull’s urgent healthcare services.
These proposals could see a new 24hr centre established at Bransholme which would offer treatment to people who need immediate care but whose condition is not serious enough to require a trip to A&E.

Erica Daley, the director of integrated commissioning at Hull CCG, said: “It’s a great pleasure for us to support Older People’s Celebration Week. Our conference starts the week with bold aims, highlighting how local services must reflect the needs of our area’s older people.
“Time and time again we’re being told that older people want to maintain their independence as much as possible. By working across a partnership that includes health professionals, the council and voluntary organisations, we can work together towards this aim.”
