Local GPs are urging people to use health services wisely over the bank holiday weekend.
Dr Dan Roper, chair of NHS Hull CCG, said:
“During long weekends, when many GP surgeries are closed, we often see an influx of people attending A&E with relatively mild conditions.
“While we would never turn anyone away, this puts extra pressure on our emergency services. That’s why we’re asking local people to think carefully about which service is best for them.
“If you’re feeling under the weather with a cold or bug, then rest is often the best remedy. You can also speak to a pharmacist who can provide over the counter medications to help combat some of the uncomfortable symptoms.”
Many pharmacies will be closed over the long weekend, but if you find yourself in a pinch a few will still be open throughout the city.

Dr Roper continued:
“If you have a mishap, there’s a 24 hour Urgent Treatment Centre at Bransholme which can care for everything from a suspected break to sprains, cuts, eye complaints and many other minor injuries.
“The centre can usually care for minor injuries much quicker than A&E and you’ll be helping to keep our essential emergency services free for serious incidents.”
“If you’re unsure where to go you can call NHS 111 who will offer you advice over the phone and point you in the direction of the most appropriate service.”

Local GPs are also reminding patients to be ready for the long weekend by picking up their regular prescriptions and making sure they have enough medication to last over the bank holiday when many GP surgeries and pharmacies will be closed.
