Friday 5 July 2019 will mark a year since the Jean Bishop Integrated Care Centre (ICC) officially opened its doors to patients in Hull; with a special ‘birthday party’ set to take place at the centre to celebrate the achievements of the team and the difference being made to the lives of local patients.
The centre which is named after Hull’s ‘Bee Lady’ – who has raised more than £125,000 for Age Concern in her trademark bee costume – is innovative in its approach to care for the elderly, offering holistic treatment and assessments for older people who are living with long term health conditions.
Emma Latimer NHS Hull Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Chief Officer said: “I am delighted to mark the anniversary of the first year of the ICC; I am so proud of the exemplary care given to older people through the service and the difference that it is making to people’s lives.”
“The results we’re seeing from the ICC show the difference we can make by working in an integrated way focussed purely around the needs of some of the most frail and elderly patients in Hull.”
Since opening in July 2018 over 2100 patients have received an Integrated Geriatric Care Assessment at the centre. The integrated approach of the ICC sees patients assessed before having an extensive integrated care plan formed, with therapists, voluntary services and other specialist services based under one roof, and blood tests and X-rays carried out as required.
The team at the ICC have reported fantastic results in terms of reducing emergency hospital admissions for the initial cohort of patients, this includes helping to ensure patients are empowered to look after their own health and manage long term conditions successfully.
In the initial cohort of patients there has been a 29% reduction in individuals needing to be admitted to hospital and a 15% reduction in emergency department attends. The team are also working specifically with care homes to reduce emergency hospital admissions and equip care home staff with the knowledge they need to manage, often complex, health needs effectively in the home.
Andrew Burnell, Chief Executive of City Health Care Partnership (CHCP) CIC, which runs the ICC, said: “We are delighted to be able to provide a service like the Integrated Care Centre and to be able to be a part of helping people in Hull to stay out of hospital and get the care they need.”
“Our nurses, therapists, health care assistants and carers’ support staff all love working at the Jean Bishop Centre and we know patients love to go there; it’s a prime example of integrated systems working across multiple sectors and providers.”
The Jean Bishop ICC is also home to Humberside Fire and Rescue Service’s East Hull fire crew, where, building on the success of the fire and rescue service and health-led Hull FIRST Falls Response Team, specially trained fire personnel support community safety and rehabilitation programmes at the ICC.
Humberside Fire Chief Fire Officer, Chris Blacksell said: “I am proud to be representing Humberside Fire and Rescue Service at the one year anniversary event of the ICC opening. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate all that the Centre has achieved in its first year.”
Chris added: “Our firefighters operate from the new East Hull Fire Station that is part of the ICC site and as well as being able to support and protect the local community they are able to engage with any of the people that use the Centre and need additional involvement from us to help them keep safe in their homes.”
Developer Citycare has developed over £100 million of new and improved health and wellbeing facilities on behalf of its public sector partners across Hull since 2004 and appointed Sewell Construction and Sewell Facilities Management to build and maintain the purpose-built ICC following a robust procurement process.
Citycare Chief Executive Tim Wigglesworth said: “We’re very proud to be marking the first anniversary of the opening of the Jean Bishop Integrated Care Centre. Looking ahead to the future, plans are in place to establish the Jean Bishop ICC as a Parkinson’s Disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Dementia hub, widening its offering and focusing on areas of health care which often affect the elderly.
